Episode #38: Profit and Loss
PROFIT AND LOSS (prod. #438; episode #18 of 2nd season)
written by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus; Director: Robert Wiemer
When I saw the title of this episode, I thought it would be another one about Ferengi economic theory, but it's not: this one attempts to humanize both the Ferengi & the Cardassians a little more. Quark behaves a bit out of character here, even forgetting about the profit motive in a couple of scenes; he gets reacquainted with an old flame (from 7 years ago), a female Cardassian professor (Mary Crosby) who chances to return to the station when her ship gets damaged. She's accompanied by two 'students' who are part of a Cardassian underground which rebels against the brutal Cardassian status quo. Obviously, the Cardassian government is after them.
In all, expanding Quark's story & personality makes him quite similar to us in this episode, but that may not be a good thing. I prefer aliens to behave more like aliens, not like copies of us. His sudden lovestruck behavior is kind of out of left field (lust I can believe in; love is another matter). The best scene, even with all the intrigue: Quark testing an area in his bar to make sure Odo is not there eavesdropping - quite amusing. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia:
actress Mary Crosby is the daughter of Bing Crosby and related to Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar on TNG).
