RIGHTFUL HEIR - episode #149 / Air Date: 5/17/93
written by James E. Brooks & Ronald Moore; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
ABOVE: is it Klingon or is it Memorex?
Worf has been feeling out-of-sorts since his adventure with lost Klingons in BIRTHRIGHT - it's a crisis of faith - to the point that he fails to arrive for his assigned shift. He's busy in his cabin trying to feverishly conjure up a vision of Kahless, the legendary Klingon warrior who set the pattern for Klingon behavior a millenium ago. Of course, this goes nowhere and Picard places Worf on leave to go to a special Klingon retreat where Worf can meditate unhampered. After 10 days, Worf is ready to call it quits there also, when suddenly Kahless (Kevin Conway) does appear before him! - it's not just a vision but a physical being. This is astonishing and Worf, though he wants to believe, struggles to accept this being as the actual Kahless, returned from the Klingon afterlife. It's not long before the Enterprise crew becomes involved: they are assigned to ferry this Kahless to meet with the Klingon chancellor, Gowron (Robert O'Reilly). This transpires to be a conflict between the spiritual Klingon leaders, led by High Priest Koroth (Alan Oppenheimer) and the political leaders - led by Gowron. There's a blood test which seems to prove that Kahless is indeed legit, but a confrontation with Gowron does not go well, prompting Worf to demand some answers from Koroth. It turns out that this Kahless is a clone, which means he's a fake; however, a Klingon belief system, one based on faith similar to our own, already empowers this Kahless to possibly take a position of some sort of leadership - the needs of the empire are great.
Extra TNG Trivia: Kahless previously appeared as a very different (and also fake) kind of Klingon in the TOS episode The Savage Curtain
