The Name of the Game: L.A. 2017 (1971)
This is the now-famous episode airing in the 3rd season of The Name of the Game series, starring Gene Barry (The War of the Worlds) and directed by a young Steven Spielberg. The main character, a magazine publisher, falls asleep at the wheel and wakes up in year 2017, by which point it's too polluted for people to be outdoors; people live underground (hey, this is only a couple of years from now ). Spielberg lent his innovative touch to this, creating a futuristic, though dystopic Earth on a low TV budget. Here is Spielberg from circa 1982 (E.T.), predicting:
This rises above most like-minded projects and most TV fare because of a detailed, comprehensive presentation of a future society - the underground L.A. - with obviously a lot of thought put in. This is thanks to a script by old-time writer Philip Wylie. The population of this future Earth is estimated at just 3 million, while the L.A. area has only about 11,000 citizens. Also stars Barry Sullivan as the local V.P. (there are several - things are run corporate style and totalitarian), Severn Darden, Sharon Farrell and a show up by Edmond O'Brien.
BoG's Score: 8 out of 10
