Poseidon (2006)
It doesn't waste time; the big wave hits the cruise ship at the 17-minute mark, but they managed to blow even this scene, trying to show the wave strike from different angles and in slow motion, as everything goes topsy-turvy inside the ship. I couldn't believe I was bored during the whole 2-minute sequence - how can you go wrong with a tidal wave scene? All the characters are cliches of course and forgettable, though Kevin Dillon manages to score as yet another idiotic moron (or is that moronic idiot?), a role he seems peculiarly suited to the past few years. Russell is an ex-mayor alpha male with a whiny daughter (Emmy Rossum). Dreyfuss plays one of the most pathetic characters ever - he was about to commit suicide when he sees the wave approaching; this reminded me of a similar scene with a girl in the wretched Avalanche film many years earlier in 1978.
Worst of all, I just didn't see any point to any of this; the plot simply copies the one from the original '72 film: a small group decide to seperate from the rest and head 'up' in the upside down ship. It's kind of sped up and by-the-numbers, and still manages to be boring, with very lousy dialog. Andre Braugher as the captain is an example of this; he seems miscast, spouting nonsense before the disaster and making useless threats at Russell afterwards. He just didn't come across as 'captainly' to me - but maybe that's standard cruise ship captains these days. There's also a kid character who is presented as a genius on such ships (the Eric Shea character in the old film) but speaks as if he's slightly brain damaged. Just awful. BoG's Score: 3 out of 10
