episode #46 - The White Lightning War
episode #11 of 3rd season / Air Date: 11/23/75 written by Wilton Denmark Directed by Phil Bondelli
For whatever reason, the period of the mid-seventies in films and TV seemed preoccupied with the topic of moonshinin' - that illegal whiskey crap, usually down south thataways - so this is Steve Austin's turn to get all Burt Reynolds-like in the backwoods. He wears a fake beard in this one (it was only a mustache in the last episode). He also regards this mission as personal - undercover agents tend to end up rattlesnake-bit in the area and one of them was a friend.
This one was more entertaining than I expected. In a clever use of Austin's bionic prowess, Austin easily breaks out of his jail cell without anyone knowing the better and causes enough damage to the local operation that it seems like his private army had been at work - Austin simply goes back to his cell, as if he'd been in there the whole time . The best bit is when Austin pretends that a rattlesnake biting his leg actually does him harm; Majors really seems to be enjoying himself here. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Bionic Trivia: there's also a startling moment when Austin snatches the corrupt sheriff's gun away and it's not done in the usual slow-mo but at the actual speed which Austin is usually able to accomplish most of the things he does; it reminded me of some moments in the Trinity comedy western films, in which the gunslinger moves at super speed.
Actor Austin Stoker shows up as a Washington D.C. contact who may not be on the up-and-up; he was in Battle For the Planet of the Apes a couple of years earlier. Robert Donner plays one of the local moonshiners & henchmen; he was also in the 2nd season's Stranger in Broken Fork as a similar redneck.
