episode #15 - In This Corner, Jaime Sommers
episode #2 of 2nd season / Air Date: 9/29/76 written by Robert McCullough,Kenneth Johnson Directed by Alan Crosland
RIGHT: new office for Oscar:
When an OSI agent goes missing (we see him surrounded by hostile female wrestlers inside a ring in the first scene), Jaime is sent in by Oscar to play the part of a female wrestler. Jaime is especially mortified by the prospect of such an assignment - this may be the closest she came to outright refusing a mission. Obviously, Jaime does not look the part; she even seems frail compared to the chunky females here who are real wrestlers. As expected, her bionic arm and legs are meant to more than even out the score. The fight manager (Norman Fell) is the main bad guy; he uses this special drug which fighters also use to secretely inject other fighters with small needles. But, is he the main bad guy? There's a defected Russian scientist (Marj Dusay) working with Oscar who may not be on the up-and-up...
The amusing scenes here are actress Wagner putting on a fake accent and then putting on an Indian get-up to play the wrestler. What's not so amusing is a serious lack of judgment by Oscar in one scene - he plays a TV spot of the female wrestlers announcing their next fight, including Jaime, and sees no problem in revealing Jaime's undercover role to a non-OSI agent in his office. WTF? Of course, this causes a problem for Jaime later. There is another instance of Jaime's bionic arm inadvertantly saving her bacon - injected with a knock-out drug, it will have no effect on her bionics. Jaime also employs the famous 2-leg dropkick on a metal door (first done by Steve Austin way back in his pilot telefilm). There's a maudlin subplot about another female wrestler who is on hard times. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Star Trek TOS actor alert: actress Dusay appeared in the infamous Spock's Brain as the alien leader who steals the brain...
