episode #21 - Sister Jaime
episode #8 of 2nd season / Air Date: 11/24/76 written by Kenneth Johnson Directed by Alan J. Levi
You guessed it - Jaime goes undercover as a nun in this one. There's a smuggling ring operating from within a convent, of all things. The Mother Superior there is very stern and seems in a bad mood. She makes the nuns do constant menial work (one can see where this will go with Jaime's bionics). It's revealed later that her bishop is a male chauvinist who wants any excuse to disperse the convent - he's unhappy that their wine-making is more successful than that of the monks who previously were in charge. Really? More serious, Jaime uncovers heroin smuggling; these wine barrels are used to store it. It culminates in a master plan that Jaime cooks up to get the crooks captured by Oscar's men outside the convent; see, if it happens inside the convent, the bishop will use the scandal...
One can't expect too much excitement in an episode involving nuns and a convent. The final act, with Jaime's voiceover during the master plan, is sort of reminiscent of Mission:Impossible - bionic nun style, of course. But, otherwise, the episode mostly meanders along, with nuns doing what nuns do. Also, in spite of Jaime's successful execution of her plan at the end - like a swiss watch - it sure looks like incriminating evidence was planted on the crooks, undoing much of the innovation in Jaime's planning. I also think this episode missed a couple of chances for Jaime's bionics to be regarded as perhaps miracles from God by the convent characters. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
