Battletruck (1982 New Zealand) (Warlords of the 21st Century)
Perhaps the most blatant copy of The Road Warrior (81), taking place after the "Oil Wars" and with one heavy in a special truck terrorizing the farmers...
Michael Beck was never a famous actor, but he made a group of entertaining B-pictures in the late 70s and early 80s, of which Battletruck is the least famous. Until the conclusion, it never provides the big action that its title (or its original title, "Warlords of the Twenty-First Century") seems to offer. Characters and plot points are simple and predictable. Elfin Beck is miscast as the gritty loner motorcyclist-hero. But the bleak landscapes, the washed-out colors, the coats and helmets, the rifles and crossbows, the armored tractor-trailer, and (later) the piecemeal battle buggy are all surprisingly convincing. Annie McEnroe (The Hand) is likeable as the heroine, and James Wainright (best known for 70s television) is excellent as the casually callous villain - who is also the heroine's father. Most of the "action" is brutality and harassment, but there is a good shootout in the middle and a good road fight at the end. Some no-fun gore (open wounds) is a minus, but the picture is at least above average. John Ratzenberger (Warlords of Atlantis) plays a sweet nerdy mechanic. See also Ultimate Warrior.
