The Land That Time Forgot (1975)
This was a box office success and how could it not be with that poster above? It was an Amicus production, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' story from 1914. What surprised me when I first saw this was that the first half hour came across as a typical war picture (World War I - 1916) at sea and even recalls submarine movies from the fifties and the later Das Boot (1981). An American (Doug McClure), a female biologist & Brit sailors manage to take over a German U-Boat; then the Germans retake their sub; then McClure and his buddies take over again - it seemed repetitive. I didn't much like this lengthy sequence since I expected prehistoric thrills early on.
Once they get to the hidden land in Antarctica somewhere, it turns into a decent jungle adventure involving dinosaurs and cavemen. As mentioned already, the FX aren't all bad in places and reminded me of The Land Unknown from the fifties, though a bit better being almost 20 years later and in bright color; my DVD version has a good picture, but I did notice those wires on the pterodactyls, tsk tsk.
The story also followed, to a small extent, some of Burroughs' concepts - he theorized a new kind of evolution, one in which an individual can get through a physical evolutionary process during his own lifetime. This has a rather downbeat ending. BoG's Score: 6/10. The director, Kevin Connor, also directed the sequel to this, as well as At the Earth's Core (1976) and Warlords of Atlantis (1978).
NOTE: I will add that there's at least one scene which betrays the sometimes lame nature of the beastly FX; a sailor is grabbed by a dino rising from the water and is obviously hanging on to the fake monster head to try & make the scene work (photo above).
