Project Moonbase (1953)
What's Happening: Communists try to sabotage US space station
Famous For: Adaptation of Heinlein story; attempts to be scientifically accurate
Like the famous Destination Moon, the independently-made and little-known Project Moonbase tries at times to be a documentary as much as a science fiction film. Indeed, some of its predictions have proven accurate. It predicts a moon landing in 1970, just one year later than the actual touchdown. Bizarrely, its Cold War scenario makes an eerie analogy to the War on Terror of the early 2000s: the communist agents are willing to commit suicide, and one even agrees to hijack a space shuttle and ram it into the US space station. But the main appeal is the camp. Cheap sets and models? Incompetent acting? Overblown commies-are-coming paranoia? Overdramatic countdown sequences? Chuckling sexism? Silly "futuristic" caps and uniforms ? Unconscious phallic imagery? You got it...
