Episode #49: Evolution
EVOLUTION - episode #1 of 3rd season / Air Date: 9/25/89
written by Michael Piller, Michael Wagner; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
This was not a good sign: the main problem that many Trek fans had with the first couple of seasons were all those episodes when Wesley would be at the center of some problem for the crew and the ship. So, the story here is that some school project by Wesley causes... a big problem for the ship. This was the first episode with a returned Dr. Beverly Crusher - she seems worried that Wesley is distant and that he doesn't get into trouble like other 17-year-old boys. Er... careful what you wish for, doc (she was away at Starfleet Command during the 2nd season).
The first few minutes of this episode are actually pretty cool: the Enterprise is at the site of an impending stellar explosion. The scientist on board emphasizes that this event happens every 196 years, so it's now or never to send in his 'egg' and study the occurrence. But, the ship's computer starts to act all whacky; it turns out, Wesley had been experimenting with a couple of nanites, fell asleep and let them wander away. The scientist wants to destroy the replicating pests but the nanites may have evolved to self-aware intelligence.
