Episode #59: The Hunted
THE HUNTED - episode #11 of 3rd season / Air Date: 1/8/90
written by Robin Bernheim; Directed by Cliff Bole
This was Trek's take on the super soldier storyline (later films were Universal Soldier-1992 and Soldier-1998); a society may develop such soldiers for their wars, but when the wars are over, what do they do with the soldiers? The answer here is that they would imprison them, keep them apart from the rest of society. The society here is applying for membership in the Federation; it seems well advanced (represented by James Cromwell, who would also play Cochrane in Star Trek First Contact). One of these soldiers escapes; due to his chemical conditioning, he proves to be nearly unstoppable - his tactics and physical abilities make him nearly a match for the Enterprise and her crew (think also the eugenically superior Khan and his people).
Overall, this turns into one of Trek's biggest action episodes. The crew manage to capture the super soldier (Jeff McCarthy) after much effort but, to their continued astonishment, they are unable to hold him. He escapes yet again and this leads to more action sequences, including with Worf (great dialog: "You are cunning. You must have Klingon blood."). This demonstrates that superior technology may be outwitted by a superior human (think Khan again). In the end, it's more commentary on social / political expediency to deal with certain problems and probably calls to mind the Vietnam War for many viewers. It's left open ended. BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
