Episode #61: Deja Q
DEJA Q - episode #13 of 3rd season / Air Date: 2/5/90
Directed by Les Landau; written by Richard Danus
This one just misses being one of the great TNG episodes, being too cutesy in a few scenes and a little tiresome by the halfway point - I get annoyed by Q's endless whining at about the 10-minute mark, but it's still a very entertaining episode. This features the 4th appearance of Q (John de Lancie, after Q Who?), who shows up minus his limitless power; according to him, the Q Continuum, his cosmic 'race' of beings, kicked him out of their 'Mount Olympus' and he is now like a normal human.
Picard and the crew don't believe Q; they think it's another of his games. They are also in the middle of a problem involving the deteriorating orbit of the moon at the planet they are trying to help - this moon is about a day away from crashing into the planet; this is pretty serious, as anyone familiar with disaster films like Armageddon would know. Picard has Q taken to the brig at first, but Q soon points out to him that, even though he doesn't have his powers, he still has knowledge beyond humans and can help with their dilemma. This is where it gets pretty interesting: Q mostly interacts with Data, who aspires to be what Q has become "in disgrace."
Once we get past all the whining and Q's noisy acclimation to his new bodily needs, we also get some observations on human nature and I observed some irony here as Data, the android, is the one who ends up advising and even instructing Q on the intricacies of human interrelating. And, after all, this is de Lancie as Q - always very watchable even with the whining. His interaction with Picard and the crew benefits from past episodes; the actors are all accustomed to this by now and this is like a sequel where everyone knows how to react off each other. Oh, also, there's a wickedly entertaining reunion scene with Q and Guinan.
