Episode #93: The Nth Degree
THE NTH DEGREE - episode #19 of 4th season / Air Date: 4/1/91
written by Joe Menosky; Directed by Rob Legato
The return of Lt. Barclay (Dwight Schultz) - OK, he never really went anywhere; we just haven't seen him as a crew member since Hollow Pursuits (3rd season). He's trying his hand at acting by this point, in a stageplay (big-nosed Cyrano) - several TNG episodes feature the crew involved in stage acting. The Enterprise has arrived at a huge malfunctioning telescope array at the edge of Federation space; there's an alien probe nearby and when La Forge & Barclay try to examine it, it zaps Barclay. Uh-oh.. now what?
This episode serves as an intriguing counterpoint and extension to Hollow Pursuits; in that older episode, Barclay made himself superior in holodeck fantasies; now he becomes the superior man in reality. There's also an unexpected development in the end for why this has all happened. I always wonder about such stories, however: everything goes back to the status quo, yet shouldn't the Enterprise crew retain the new tech for the shield's power, for example? Just a thought.
BoG's Score: 7 out of 10
