The Changeling - episode #37
THE CHANGELING (2nd season; episode #37) Air Date: 09/29/67
Directed by Marc Daniels writer: John Meredyth Lucas
"NOMAD. I AM NOMAD. I AM Perpetual NOW." I tell you what: the Enterprise has had dangerous beings on board before, but nothing quite like this invincible little machine whose only goal, fancy talk aside, is killing human beings. Yet, Kirk brings it aboard; well, he had no choice really - the first act depicted the ship as being just one more power blast away from being vaporized. But, Kirk is one lucky fellow (when we think about it, luck plays a huge role in Kirk's incredible Starfleet career; plus some chutzpah). Kirk's name happens to resemble the name of the original Nomad probe's creator - Jackson Roykirk. Nomad assumes some things due to this.
Yes, I said the original Nomad probe. This new 'upgraded' version has the power to wipe out the populations of entire solar systems, the benefit of having been joined with some alien probe (the 'Other'). The new Nomad has its own ideas on imperfection and what is to be done about it; humans obviously would not meet its strict standards. This act of sheer genocide should be almost unimaginably horrific, but is kind of brushed over here, a weakness to the story. McCoy, for example, acts more indignant over what happens to Uhura and Scotty - perhaps because now it's personal. Still, this is like Kirk bringing aboard a miniature version of V'Ger (more on that later).
Scotty, btw, reverted to the stereotypical hot-tempered, impulsive crewman in a couple of episodes around this time (the other one was Who Mourns For Adonais).
Also, Uhura's re-education strains believability and doesn't really make sense, even in the middle of a story about a crazy all-powerful robot.

Extra Trek Trivia: much of this episode's plot was transferred to Star Trek-the Motion Picture (1979), in which the returning machine searching for its creator was much larger and named V'Ger. The photo of Jackson Roykirk is actually that of director Daniels, in Trek dress uniform.
