episode #12 - The Golden Cage
THE GOLDEN CAGE - episode #12 / production #5 / Air Date: 12/29/68
teleplay by Jack Turley; story by Anthony Wilson; Directed by Sobey Martin
This one really pointed out how the little people are forced to be scavengers, mentioning one strategy as picking up tiny scraps after some giants have a picnic, as if the littles are literally ants. At the start of this one, Dan the co-pilot (Don Marshall) is seen carrying a giant carrot into the ship (not a very convincing prop on DVD), while one of the women has set up a table with giant bread crumbs. Fitzhugh, as in several episodes, is very annoying here, bitching about not eating enough; I'm surprised that no one ever punches him, since a couple of the other males have short tempers.
The main plot has to do with a glass jar that Steve and Mark come across; inside the jar is a lady (Celeste Yarnall). This striking-looking blonde woman seems to be content with merely lounging inside this comfortable glass cage. Mark's immediate impulse is to rescue her, but Steve believes this to be a trap set by the giants. Steve is probably correct, but this sets up a severe argument between the two guys. Meanwhile, Fitzhugh makes plans to get a giant turkey . This one is a bit slow & corny, even with revelations about who the mysterious lady is. There is a slightly chilling statement about brainwashing. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
Giant Threats: a turkey - though less a threat, more a potential meal
Giants Trivia: actress Yarnall may be familiar to fans of Star Trek TOS: she played a crew member admired by Chekov in the episode The Apple.
