Twister (1996)
Before the HD DVD, I last saw the film almost a dozen years earlier, on the Laserdisc released just after its theatrical run. The new HD DVD is pretty sharp; the FX still look pretty good - not the tornadoes themselves, which have a slight touch of the plastic to them (still ok of course), but various other items like flying cows and other hurtling objects. I never much liked the subplot of the two main characters (played by Helen Hunt & Bill Paxton) - it always came across as screenplay writing 101 class to me - bland, committee-style writing, very cliche, with Paxton's new fiancee (Jami Gertz) along for the ride just as Paxton reaches a crucial turning point in his life of chasing tornadoes. Still, it was fun, with an almost carefree, wild-anything-goes tone to it as it becomes a strange road movie by the middle part.
I'd forgotten some of the actors in supporting roles in this, including Philip Seymour Hoffman in an early role; he plays kind of a goofball here. You can kind of see why his career progressed as it did since he turned a really nothing role into one of the more memorable characters here - but it's not saying all that much, since I did forget he was in this over the previous decade. I'm really surprised that there was never any sequel to this, as this was the 2nd biggest grossing movie of the year in '96. They could have done a movie about an 'F-6' category twister (in the film, twisters are rated F1 to F5, with F5 described as the 'finger of God').
After watching this last time, I was in 'disaster film' mood and watched Volcano (1997) again. Then, the next day, I watched Daylight (1996) and, of course, Dante's Peak.
