Episode #11: The Nagus
THE NAGUS (prod.#411; first season) Director: David Livingston
written by Ira Steven Behr
This one focused on Quark and the Ferengi, so if you're a fan of Ferengi, this one's for you. I'm not, so I find this episode wearisome, though it has its amusing moments. In the plot, DS9 is visited by the Nagus (Wallace Shawn), who is some old high muckety-muck in the Ferengi hierarchy (there's even an homage or two to scenes from The Godfather film).
Since this Nagus is kind of old, I suppose it's no surprise that he passes away midway through the episode; but, not before selecting Quark as his successor. Quark is impressed with himself but also finds himself the target of assassination attempts - from unexpected quarters, it turns out. I'm noticing that these early episodes all have a trace of a mystery in them, resembling a sci-fi noir at times. I am puzzled that no charges were brought against those who set off a bomb; Sisko & Odo seem to be 'out to lunch' in this episode. This one is also a closer look at Ferengi 'Rules of Acquisition' and other details - whoopee. There's also a subplot about Sisko's son and Jake's buddy, the Ferengi kid Nog. BoG's Score: 5 out of 10
