Episode #16: If Wishes Were Horses
IF WISHES WERE HORSES (prod.#416; first season) Director: Robert Legato
written by Nell McCue Crawford, William L. Crawford and Michael Piller
It probably would have helped me like this episode more if there weren't obvious variations of this on all previous Star Trek shows: the Starfleet heroes run into imaginary characters or people who cannot possibly be there.
All of a sudden, DS9 is visited by Rumpelstiltskin, famous baseball player Buck Bokai and a submissive, flirtatious version of Dax. The connections seem obvious: O'Brien was reading to his daughter the famed fairy tale; Sisko & Jake are big fans of Bokai, having created a holodeck version of the player; and Bashir has his juvenile fantasies about Dax. Other stuff includes snow on the promenade and an ostrich-like animal. The cause has something to do with unusual energy readings in nearby space. The twist is that these aren't just illusions but aliens on their own kind of exploration. It has some amusing moments, especially concerning Dax, but is ultimately harmless & pointless. BoG's Score: 4 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia: according to Star Trek series (TNG, DS9), baseball as a spectator sport would end in year 2042, the year of the final World Series. Bokai was mentioned in TNG episodes and makes his first appearance here; he would pop up again.
