Episode #21: The Homecoming
THE HOMECOMING (prod.#421; episode #1 of 2nd season)
Directed by Winrich Kolbe; written by Jeri Taylor and Ira Steven Behr
I know that Babylon 5 was conceptualized and is regarded as a 'novel for TV' and I'm getting the same impression here.
The rescue mission at the labor camp is a success (I liked the location filming here; it even recalled the big budget pictures of past decades - the biblical epics - to an extent). Nalas is greeted as a hero, including by top ranking political figure Minister Jaro (Frank Langella). But, Nalas seems more than just tired; he appears reluctant to embrace his new role. He later confides in Sisko that some of his accomplishments have been... exaggerated - not by himself but by others who made some assumptions. He was a freedom fighter, yes, but not really different from any of the others. Sisko determines, however, that Bajorans need a legend or a symbol like Nalas, someone to believe in and to lead them; he convinces Nalas of this.
