Episode #23: The Siege
THE SIEGE (prod.#423; 3rd episode of 2nd season)
written by Michael Piller; Directed by Winrich Kolbe
follows THE CIRCLE - the final 3rd of this trilogy features an evacuation of DS9 and Sisko now leading another combat team to deal with the Bajoran soldiers who have boarded the station (led by General Krim and a fanatical colonel played by Steven Weber). Sisko's tactic is to basically 'sneak & strike.' The primary aim, however, is to let the proper people know of the Cardassians' involvement. We know Sisko and the heroes will eventually be successful but there may be casualties before it's all done. Also, we see a 'Palukoo' here on one of Bajor's moons; it's a big hairy spider-like animal - straight out of the Golden Age of Sci-Fi!
Though I mentioned this as a 'novel for TV' in my post for THE HOMECOMING, the 3 episodes also function as a DS9 movie - it's about 130 minutes all together and has a pretty good budget. It well displayed the complexities of the Bajoran system - especially the fact that not all Bajorans are alike; indeed, they are as diverse & contrary as us, each with their own motives and aspirations... and their own deceits and delusions. More, during the course of this movie, a subversive message is suggested - that symbolism and legend is often preferable for a society rather than actual truth or facts. In all, a well done political thriller. BoG's Score: 7.5 out of 10
