Episode #26: Melora
___ MELORA __________ (prod.#426; 2nd season) _______ Directed by Winrich Kolbe
written by Evan Carlos Somers, Steven Baum, Michael Piller and James Crocker
The title character represents a romantic interest for Dr. Bashir (or, Julian to his friends) in this episode. She hails from a planet with low surface gravity; hence, she needs special accommodations to move in our 'normal' gravity. She's the first from her planet to join Starfleet - she's an ensign and the new cartographer - and gets by on sheer determination... and a slightly defensive attitude. In fact, too defensive; though she strives for self-sufficiency and prefers little special treatment, the way she speaks to superior officers is somewhat improper for an ensign, so she gets away with a lot compared to other ensigns - and therefore inadvertently demands special treatment that way.
Besides the intriguing aspect of someone from such an environment (her planet's gravity may be similar to our moon) and how a 'disabled' person would get by in the 24th century, this is at best only moderately interesting. I'm not particularly interested in Bashir's love life and we all know there won't be any permanent connection. Likewise, Bashir's medical breakthrough strikes me as tacked on and too convenient - is this guy a real genius or what? (wait, maybe he is - see later seasons). His reaction - amazement - to the low gravity in Melora's quarters is also odd, as if he's never experienced such in the 24th century? Worst of all, the episode misses an opportunity to show Melora's amazement at finally moving around on her own - that's where the amazement should have been.
As with many episodes around this time, there's a subplot involving Quark. In this case, he's targeted by a former partner in crime just out of prison. This alien has a skin formation going from his nose to his chin (like a flesh handle, LOL), essentially covering his mouth. Besides looking stupid, it makes me wonder how or why a race would evolve this, ah, appendage, essentially making it harder to place food in the mouth - not very logical. Note that the camera doesn't show how the alien takes a drink in one scene. BoG's Score: 5.5 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia:
Kira appears in only one late scene and Jake does not appear at all in this episode.
