Episode #29: Second Sight
SECOND SIGHT (prod. #429; 2nd season) Directed by Alexander Singer
written by Mark Gehred-O'Connell, Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe
This story begins on the anniversary of the battle of Wolf 359, also the time of Sisko's wife's death, so Sisko is a bit melancholy. Then he meets a mysterious, beautiful woman - dressed in red - named Fenna (Salli Elise Richardson) on the promenade. Sisko is instantly attracted to her, even beguiled by her, but she disappears when he's not looking. Also at DS9 is the famous Professor Seyetik (Richard Kiley), a larger-than-life Federation scientist who is about to embark on his greatest project. The DS9 command personnel go to have dinner with Seyetik on his ship and Sisko is stunned when he meets Seyetik's wife, Nidell, who looks just like Fenna. Nidell, however, has a more subdued personality and claims not to know Sisko.
There's not too much mystery here and the revelation is less-than-intriguing: Fenna is some kind of psychic projection of Nidell's, materializing when Nidell is asleep. This does benefit from the guest appearances, especially by Kiley, who plays Seyetik like an exuberant genius - he's imposing but usually wears down people quickly. His previous work, impressive even by 24th century standards, involved terra-forming planets; now he plans to re-ignite a star. It's interesting that Bashir is the one who really admires Seyetik, in view of what we learn about Bashir's background later in the series. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Extra Deep Trivia: actress Richardson would go on to play a regular role on the series Eureka.
