Episode #34, segment 2 - Voices in the Earth
#34b: VOICES IN THE EARTH (episode #10 of 2nd season)
written by Alan Brennert Directed by Curtis Harrington
This takes place in the far future - a thousand years from now - and involves a small survey team arriving at a dead planet, the name of which is barely known. The elder scientist (Martin Balsam) of the group does know the name - Earth; he and the others are the descendants of the Earthlings who despoiled Earth but had the technology to leave it (it's mentioned how the ozone layer was destroyed by chemicals). This is meant to be a last survey, after which mining ships will arrive to strip the planet of whatever it has left. The old scientist encounters ghostly entities, some kind of last vestiges of the human life that used to be there. No one in his team believes him; the female commander, who also used to be his student (Jenny Agutter, looking quite different from her role in The Last Defender of Camelot), thinks he's losing it.
This begins in an intriguing manner - I like far future stories - but I admit I don't really get a lot of this: who, what and why are these ephemeral entities? It's never really explained. They have certain powers, like allowing the scientist to breathe in the now-poisonous atmosphere, and claim they cannot travel in ships which go into warp speed. They wish to leave the dead Earth - but, to what end? I also didn't understand how or why they managed to work a miracle at the end concerning the dead Earth. In all, this story seems to be a lecture to all the people now steadily destroying the ozone layer and ruining the Earth, but it's all done in some half-ass backwards manner. I did like the set design - some of this reminds me of the much later WALL-E; and, Balsam & Agutter are always great to watch. BoG's Score: 6 out of 10
Trivia from the Zone: Star Trek actor alert - one of the survey team is played by Tim Russ, later Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager
