Assignment: Earth - episode #55
ASSIGNMENT:EARTH (2nd season; episode#55)
Directed by Marc Daniels // writers: Art Wallace, Gene Roddenberry
Air Date: 03/29/68
This was how the 2nd season ended - not with a bang, but with an anomaly. This story was written as a pilot for a new sci-fi/spy show and was incorporated into this Star Trek episode; thus, Kirk & Spock became guest stars within their own show. More, this episode was sort of like a sequel to the 1st season episode Tomorrow is Yesterday, the first one about time travel back to present-day Earth. Of course, the proposed new series never happened. It would have been similar to other Roddenberry projects such as The Questor Tapes (TV-74), in which mankind is watched over by higher powers, sort of a science fictional stand-in for God. Yet, who watches the watchers, eh?
As casually reported by Kirk at the start, the Enterprise has purposely traveled back to 20th-century Earth, following up on the earlier accidental visitation. I've always wondered how this mission was green-lit; everyone worries about the Prime Directive but apparently think nothing about possibly altering Earth's history and undoing centuries of progress. Sure enough, the Enterprise intercepts a powerful transporter beam from 1,000 light years away and beam aboard a man in a dark suit, holding a cat. The episode is actually best in these early scenes, when we meet the mysterious Gary-7 who, though appearing to be human, can resist Spock's Vulcan nerve pinch and has knowledge of the future. Though Kirk is the one in the wrong time, he still behaves like it's his job to police the area around Earth and he treats Gary-7 as guilty until proven innocent.
The episode has some slow spots, unless you get really involved with all those shots of the rocket waiting to be launched, but much of this is mitigated anyway by the intriguing Gary-7 character, played by Robert Lansing with gravitas, an aura of solemn heroism and a hint of possible menace. The rather wild backstory for special agents like Gary-7 was created with the intent of an on-going series on present-day Earth, complete with futuristic gadgets and self-aware computers, probably a combination of superspy danger & alien invaders. The premise was wide open: Gary-7 might have dealt with anything from outer space visitors, time traveling agents or just Earthbound threats. There was a new modern mythology waiting to be expanded on and I sometimes picture a season-worth of episodes featuring Gary-7, his cat and his daffy secretary, Ms. Lincoln. Oh, yes - Ms. Lincoln; how could we forget her?
ASSIGNMENT:EARTH opening credits as if it were a TV series in the sixties:
This was an early role for the unusual actress Teri Garr and she was deliriously eccentric right from the start, accidentally joining Gary-7 in his mission to save the world. It would have been great to see further interaction between her and the black cat, as well as with Gary-7, a possibly odd menage a trois, to be sure. By the way, the story was mostly set in New York City, which looks strangely primitive to us, since we're in a futuristic mood when watching this show. Finally, note how quickly Kirk beams two cops off the Enterprise when they accidentally beam aboard; he learned this approach from his experiences in Tomorrow is Yesterday. BoG's Score: 8 out of 10
Extra Trek Trivia: Lansing's credit appears at the beginning of the episode, also anomalous for the show. The human incarnation of Isis the cat was played by Victoria Vetri - yes, the cavegirl from When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, just recently released on DVD! According to this episode, an advanced alien culture began selecting special human agents 6,000 years ago; Flint, of Requiem For Methuselah fame, was born 6,000 years ago. Coincidence? A lot of stuff seemed to be happening back at that point in history.

Assignment: Earth - full episode
CLASSIC TREK QUOTES:
Gary-7: "Humans with a Vulcan.
______You -- you're from the future, Captain! You're going to have to beam me down to Earth immediately."
Scotty: "It's impossible to hide a whole planet."
Gary-7: "Impossible for you, not for them."
I think this episode is a good example of one that would have been very average had not an actor like Lansing been the central character. (another one was Space Seed, with Ricardo Montalban). Lansing was very memorable in this assignment, commanding everyone's attention, to the point that now, 40 years later, I'm still wondering how it would have been if there were a season-worth of adventures with Gary-7 and Roberta Lincoln. I think there would have been a neat little series there, even if it lasted only a year. Probably better than The Invaders. At least as good as Land of the Giants. Maybe in some parallel universe...
LEFT: Lansing showing a less cold side
