episode #36 - The Return of the Bionic Woman
episode #1 of 3rd season / Air Date: 9/14/75 written by Kenneth Johnson Directed by Richard Moder
They didn't waste any time in bringing her back - supposedly deceased towards the end of the 2nd season, Jaime Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) returns for her encore 2-parter at the start of the 3rd season; that was a sure way of getting good ratings as the season began. This gets sappy in spots and did we really need to hear Lee Majors singing again..?
In a rare instance, Steve Austin gets seriously damaged while on his latest mission - a heavy overhang lands on his legs and it's bad enuff that his bionic legs need to be rebuilt. It's also established that Steve is depressed over Jaime, thinking back on good times (maybe he was distracted enuff to cause the injury). At the recuperation center, Steve thinks he spots Jaime in a recovery room. It seems like he's just imagining things but later we find out that Oscar and Dr. Rudy Wells have been covering up her rebirth: the truth is revealed in flashback - a young brilliant doctor (Richard Lenz) had rushed in just after Jaime was declared clinically dead; his new radical procedure involving cryonics revived her. Oscar & Rudy wanted to spare Austin the possible pain should her recovery be temporary.
Yes, it's eye-rolling, typical TV fantasy, but that's what happens when they kill off a popular character. However, it's not all rosy -Jaime is not all the way returned; brain damage in a portion of her brain has resulted in total amnesia; she's the same, personality-wise, but with no memory. So, Steve's anguish now takes on a new form: she's back but she doesn't know who he is. Steve is forced to take on a more brotherly role with her, helping her back to full functional bionic capability; in addition, Jaime develops a crush on her young doctor, typical of some patient-doctor relationships when a patient feels beholden to her doctor-savior. It's then decided that Steve & Jaime visit their hometown to possibly jog her mind - continued in part 2. BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
Bionic Trivia: this marked the first acting stint by Martin E. Brooks as Rudy Wells, taking over from Alan Oppenheimer, though Oppenheimer would be back one more time in The Bionic Criminal episode.
