episode #22 - The Vega Influence
episode #9 of 2nd season / Air Date: 12/1/76 written by Arthur Rowe Directed by Mel Damski
A pretty wild sci-fi episode with a load of mystery in the first couple of acts; unfortunately, at least one crucial item of the mystery is never explained or addressed at the end. But, it starts out like a humdinger - Jaime and her doctor (the one that saved her life in The Return of the Bionic Woman on the 6MDM, played by Richard Lenz) are going somewhere in a cargo airplane with 3 military pilots (Philip Carey, Don Marshall, John Lawrence) and have to stop off at an island base off Alaska to refuel. Something is wrong with the guy at ground control and, when they land, they find the base to be deserted. Then, the pilots also disappear. Jaime and the doc find a meteorite in an isolation chamber - uh,oh. Yep, it must be some kind of alien invasion...
This episode, at its best, recalls more eerie sci-fi films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and even has some similarity to The Thing (the later 1982 version). At the midpoint, it becomes a kind of 'attack of slow zombie people' thriller when actual people do reappear. Jaime then figures out why she is partially immune and a local girl (Jamie Smith Jackson) is completely immune. The one thing that remained baffling to me by the conclusion is the whole notion of people disappearing. Usually, they walk behind something, you hear a muffled moan, and it's as if they evaporated. On a video recording, they fall down towards the floor and then we can't see them anymore, even as the camera tilts towards the floor. It's as if the writer came up with this great aspect of the mystery but wasn't able to come up with an explanation by the final draft. The actual effect or influence was a control of people - nothing that would make them suddenly disappear. And what's Vega anyway..? BoG's Score: 6.5 out of 10
Star Trek TOS actor alert: Don Marshall appeared in the episode The Galileo Seven as crew member Lt. Boma
